Downunder – Sideways Strata Sedimentation
When I was a geology student at Queensland University this author’s (John Mackay) professor told the class that the layers in the Grand Canyon seem to get old sideways and left it unexplained. I now had an enduring puzzle. How did this happen when everyone teaches the bottom layers are oldest and Darwin’s theory of evolution is based on that? Many years later you’ll enjoy the research in this article.
Many years ago a German walked across the mud flats of Vienna, the canal city. He noticed that as he walked horizontally, the order in which the beds appeared was the same as you found them when you drilled vertically. As he puzzled over this, he began to realise that the sediments were actually growing sideways. One of the most important points made by Geology founder Nicholas Steno (1600’s), was that the bottom bed is always laid down first. But based on Steno’s belief that the bottom layer got there first, came other beliefs, i.e. 1. the fossils in the bottom layer are oldest, 2. the ones in the top layer are youngest, 3. therefore the fossil record shows past life was different, 4. therefore evolution, 5. therefore the Bible is false, which is where much of the world is today.
Yes, it took several centuries for people to move from Creationist Flood thinker Nicholas Steno (1666) up to Charles Darwin (1859). But some people saw this coming as soon as Steno made his suggestion about the bottom layer without ever having tested it. UK scientist John Ray (1691) is on record saying if Steno was right the world is far older than the Biblical record. Tragically most geologists never even think through where they got their beliefs about order of layers or ever admit that they are beliefs. In the latter part of the 1900’s, a Frenchman took up the work of the German and is now far more famous as well as more controversial for his experiments showing how sediments form. French Sedimentologist, Guy Berthault demonstrated that strata actually do form sideways. This should be self-evident as any sediment being carried by a stream, or river or flood are coming from one direction and going to another, i.e. travelling sideways. There is no erosional sedimentation process in the world where the sediment comes only from the top and sinks first to the bottom. But how to duplicate this research for the laymen to understand?
Student helper Tihan (middle), plus Fred Dainty and John Mackay and several helpers constructed a series of strata making machines to demonstrate this. After much trial and error to get the scale right – the machines are starting to show results. After several months of testing, the Mach 6 version (above), along with the experiment showing both inclined layers and horizontal layers of sand, growing from right to left (bottom left). Note the horizontal layer of lighter coloured sand. Evidence that layers do not form one on top of the other, also means that if you found a fossil buried on the right hand side in the top layer, and a fossil buried on the left hand side at exactly the same depth – the one on the right is older than the one on the left. It also means that if you found one buried at the bottom of the right hand side, it is actually younger than the one found in the top of the left hand side layers. Charles Lyell’s famous history of rocks on earth which is based on Steno’s vertical order of the fossils, which Darwin then ran with to get his false theory of evolution is fatally flawed. Noah’s Flood with massive tidal surges across the earth’s surface is far better.
