We have preformed multiple tests using branches, wood, and a class room assembled miniaturised demonstration in a glass using tooth picks. The results are always the same – trees alive or dead or any portion of a tree soaks up water in one direction. Therefore, the root end becomes water logged first ensuring that trees tend to sink vertically. The resulting debris on the water bottom looks like a forest of trees – but it never grew there.
