AUSSIE GOLDFIELD FOSSIL TRIP SPECTACULAR SUCCESS as a great crowd joined us for a full day’s excursion into the old Victorian gold fields. The resulting fossil graptolites (left), were beautifully preserved and magnificently coloured and obviously rapidly buried. Graptolites seem to be some kind of floating coral animal. They are currently extinct and hence no use to the theory of evolution.

Field trip leader John Mackay, pokes his head out of one of the abandoned gold mines which litter the whole district and whose debris sometimes contains fairly good fossils.
