Gaps in Evolution
On a cold, blustery, wet and wild day, John Mackay (above) is about to descend a very steep slope down towards what has become known as Hutton’s Unconformity at Siccar Point on the east coast of Scotland. This location was found in 1788 by Professor James Hutton from Edinburgh University who was one of the most famous thinkers in pushing geological thinking from a Biblical Creation, Noah’s Flood basis, towards atheistic evolutionism.
Hutton promoted his theories that the rocks at Siccar Point are evidence of a vast amount of missing time. His explanation was that the bottom layers had been laid down horizontally (Steno’s thinking), then they had been solidified, tipped vertically, then eroded to form a new surface. Then new layers of rocks were laid down in yet another vast period of time. So Hutton’s theories of the earth involved a) vast amounts of time; b) long slow deposition; and c) a huge difference in age between the top and bottom layers.

As we repeatedly tell people, if you’re looking for a creature’s family tree – apply the logic of human laws of inheritance. If grandpa wants to leave you $3 million, and you can’t prove your father is his son, or your mother his daughter, you will never get the money. One gap, one generation missing and you don’t have a family tree. The same is true in geology or biology. Yes, there is definitely a missing sediment here. A real gap, but it is not a time gap. What the gap does tell you is that one layer was laid down under water over a vast area, then a second catastrophic event scoured off the top and dumped the second layers at different angles over huge continental areas. The very flood and the Biblical account of creation that Hutton and Darwin so despised, is a much better place to start. Pray as we organise field trips worldwide. Some very easy, some tough. Some involving great exercise like this one which keeps us fit, even if exhausted.
